We created our own version of the popularized “Eddie Reese Invite” from the University of Texas Men’s Swimming Team; dubbing the meet, “The M & M Invite,” that’s short for “Marc & Mike.”
The idea behind this workout is simple, a week out of our focus meet, Buffalo Speedo Sectionals, let’s give the athletes some fun events that allow them to work on all the fundamentals, i.e. starts, turns, finishes, etc…but we’re going to control the distances and strokes so that they don’t “hyper-focus” on their times.
We also had the athletes put on their tech suits and get really excited for these swims. One of the ideas behind this meet was to encourage the swimmers to work on their “take-out” paces for the 200’s of stroke; you’ll see there are many 150 yard distances offered; as well as 50’s of each stroke to work on “take-out” pace for the 100’s.
We were very excited to see the response from our swimmers and we really tried to make sure that they knew there were no risks in trying to attack each event; all out, without worrying about their times. I have found that nurturing this mentality going into higher level competitions is very helpful in preparing the swimmers for future performances.
