Week #38, 2012 – T2 Aquatics

T2 Aquatics (USA)

I feel that to get a good sense of what’s going on in a workout, we’ve got to understand how the workout fits into the week, month, season, and year. Here is an example of how we start the week at T2 Aquatics on Monday, and then Tuesday.

The AM workout on Monday is not included (it tends to be pretty general, mixing of strokes — and is either 3500 yards or 5500-6500 yards depending on schoool requirements as well as the individual).

Our Monday session is mainly aerobic threshold work, and this Monday we plan to do some IM work (FreeIM which is Free, Back, Breast, Free) to be specific. We are setting up a Freestyle Active Rest set on Tuesday. Oftentimes we will train Freestyle threshold on Mondays and go to “Stroke” or “IM” Active Rest on Tuesdays. I view a week’s worth of workouts as one continuous body of work, so it’s important to me set up more than one day at a time.

Sep 11, 2012 – T2 Aquatics

T2 Aquatics (USA)

This workout is Erika Erndl’s 10th day back in action after an end-of-the-summer break. The Fly set is mainly active rest but it evolves into straight swims at the end.

Aug 24, 2012 – T2 Aquatics

T2 Aquatics (USA)

Today’s workout has four parts. First, the warmup, which is 2750 yards long. I hope to keep them moving for the full 42 minutes, and achieve some cardio training. Second, the technical set of 25s is a set we have been doing this fall. The athletes are getting pretty good at kicking head-first with their hands at the side, so we’re continuing to hone that skill.

Aug 8, 2012 – Florida Keys Swim Club – Toy Day

Florida Keys Swim Club

Even when training mostly Age Group athletes, you need to break the rhythm of “crushing” them in every workout and give them something “fun”. Coach Jon Olsen calls these practices “toy days”.

This is the first practice of the second week of our official fall season. Most swimmers took 1-2 weeks away from the pool prior to last Monday.

July 7, 2012 – T2 Aquatics

T2 Aquatics (USA)

This workout is typical of a breaststroke endurance-style workout for T2 Aquatics, although I think it was written with more detail and thus performed a bit better than what we’ve done in the past.

T2 Aquatics – Meet Warmups

T2 Aquatics (USA)

At T2 Aquatics, we teach the athletes a routine when they are 10 or 11, and then help them refine it as they grow into top-level swimmers. This ability of an athlete to “do it yourself” is key to high-level performances!

In 2001, I coached a group that had 90 minutes of pool time each day. I wanted more! In an attempt to get a “full” workout in, I decided to combine my warmup and main series a few times per week. This workout is an example of what I started in 2001, and have continued to do through this year.

T2 Aquatics (USA)

We train for great 100/200 flys in a variety of ways. This workout provided the athletes with an opportunity to swim a significant amount of fly, one 50 at a time – with intervals that challenge and train the athlete’s fitness level.

May 11, 2011 – Fighting Manatee Swim Club

Fighting Manatee Swim Club

Early Wednesday morning workout from the Fighting Manatee Masters Swim Team in the Florida Keys. Got to mix it up every once in a while with equipment and “special” drills.
