Another workout from the Florida Keys Swim Club Gold Group while visiting my old team at the Jacobs Aquatic Center. It’s really up to you how hard you want this workout to be by adapting the intervals according to your abilities.
Running while taking a 1-3 week break is a great way to maintain a bit of your aerobic “work ability” during time away from the pool. You will be somewhat out of shape, but you should be refreshed mentally, and it won’t take longer than 3-6 weeks to be back in great form.
The main set of this workout is known as the “Glen Housman” set. Glen Housman is an Australian, who won the silver medal in the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games.
The following is an example of what I would consider a “Lactate Tolerance” practice. We spent about 5 weeks performing a set like this one, about once per week – during April and May this season.
Our last session on this training trip at the National Training Center d’Coque in Luxembourg. This morning we were really just trying to get a loosen swim in before the long bus ride back home.

This workout is typical of a breaststroke endurance-style workout for T2 Aquatics, although I think it was written with more detail and thus performed a bit better than what we’ve done in the past.
At T2 Aquatics, we teach the athletes a routine when they are 10 or 11, and then help them refine it as they grow into top-level swimmers. This ability of an athlete to “do it yourself” is key to high-level performances!
You should always start the year the same way you want it to end … with a bang! That’s what the team did for their January 1st morning workout.
